The Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) is the largest cancer clinical trials cooperative group in the United States. Funded by research grants from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), a part of the National Institutes of Health, the Group conducts clinical trials to prevent and treat cancer in adults, and to improve the quality of life for cancer survivors.
The Southwest Oncology Group is a network of more than 5,000 physicians across the United States who work in a variety of medical settings and have a strong interest in bringing innovative cancer treatments to their patients. Southwest Oncology Group trials are conducted by investigators at more than 550 institutions, including 18 of the National Cancer Institute's 63 designated cancer centers.
National cooperative studies are critical in helping to establish new standards of care.
The University of Arizona Cancer Center has been a continuously funded member of the Southwest Oncology Group since 1974. In addition to participating in SWOG studies, the Cancer Center has played a significant role in the scientific leadership and administration of the Group and has made major contributions in terms of pilot study development. The University of Arizona routinely participates in therapeutic trials coordinated by other groups (such as NSABP and ECOG), as endorsed by SWOG, via the NCI Clinical Trials Support Unit (CTSU).
The Principal Investigator for the Cancer Center's SWOG Program is Thomas P. Miller, MD, Professor of Medicine, Director of the ACC Lymphoma Program, and Co-Principal Investigator for the Lymphoma SPORE in collaboration with the University of Rochester. The SWOG program is a multidisciplinary effort with participation by the disciplines listed below. SWOG investigators provide leadership in a number of SWOG committees and coordinate and analyze many studies annually.
