TACMASR is equipped with instruments and resources to analyze fixed and frozen human and research animal tissues and cells using techniques of routine histology, automated and manual immunostaining and laser capture microdissection.

Laser Capture Microdissection

  • Arcturus Veritas TM Laser Capture Microdissection Instrument (Molecular Devices, Inc)
  • Special slides and caps for capturing tissues for downstream RNA and DNA analysis
  • Stains, reagents and equipment for preparation of material for microdissection

Constructing Tissue MicroArrays (TMAs)

  • Beecher Tissue Arrayer (Modified)
  • We have also developed a manual technique for constructing TMAs

Digital Imaging

  • Olympus BX50 Microscope and CellSens DP72 Imaging System for light and fluorescent microscopy (this is the camera in the lab)
  • Nikkon Labophot-2 Dual Microscope equipped with Paxcam 3 camera and Pax-It Digital Image Management and Image Analysis (this is the camera in Dr. Nagle’s office)
  • BioImagene iScan Coreo Au slide scanning and quantitation instrumentation

TACMASR is also equipped with instruments and resources to collect, preserve, bank, and annotate biospecimens.

Acquisition and preservation of tissues and body fluids

  • Dry Ice and Liquid Nitrogen supplied by UA Cryogenics
  • Two Collection Carts stocked with equipment and materials to snap freeze and fix surgical or research animal tissues
  • BSL2 Biosafety Cabinet
  • Sorvall Legend Centrifuge

  • Qiagen BioRobot EZ1 DNA/RNA Harvester and cards for isolating DNA from whole blood

Biospecimen Banking and Storage

Clinical and pathological annotation of surgical biospecimens

  • In collaboration with the UACC Cancer Prevention and Control Lab, we are in the process of customizing the NIH CaTissue Data Management System to annotate surgical cancer patient biospecimens with clinical and pathological information.
