Pilot Research Program

CANCER RESEARCH FUNDS AVAILABLE

DEADLINE: October 5, 2009 by 5 p.m.

Qualified faculty from the University of Arizona and its affiliates are encouraged to apply for cancer research funds made available through an American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant (ACS-IRG) and the Arizona Cancer Center Support Grant (AZCCSG). These funds are intended to provide seed money to new investigators to help them with starting their research programs and to obtain preliminary data in support of more extensive proposals. Only applications that relate to cancer research will be accepted. However, cancer-related research will be interpreted using the broadest definition.

Tenure-track, clinical-track, and research-track  faculty at the assistant professor level who have not had independent federal or American Cancer Society funding in the past are eligible to apply and applicants must be within 8 years of their first independent research or faculty appointment. A more detailed description of eligibility standards may be found in the “Definition of a New Investigator” document on the web site.

Note that new investigators who received ACS-IRG funding in previous years can reapply for continuation of their projects providing they still meet the other eligibility criteria. However, competitive renewals MUST include a completed progress report and a letter that indicates the applicant has attended the New Investigator’s workshop sponsored by the office of the COM’s vice president for research. (Applicants may contact Sangita Pawar Sangita@email.arizona.edu for more information on the New Investigator’s workshop.)

Budget requests may not exceed $30,000 in direct costs. Some restrictions on budgetary items apply. A detailed list is provided in the “allowable budget items” file available on the web.

All applications are due in electronic form by 5 p.m. October 5 and are to be e-mailed to Lynn Frazier at LFrazier@azcc.arizona.edu.

Note: Due to differing funding sources there will be two start dates for awards, January 1 and July 1, 2010. However, all applications are due on the same date, will be evaluated at the same time, and will be funded for a one year period.
