Interim Head, UA Biomedical Engineering Department
Associate Professor in Biomedical Engineering, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Optical Sciences
Dr. Urs Utzinger received his graduate training in mechanical engineering (MS 1989) and biomedical engineering (PhD 1995) from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zürich Switzerland. He was a post doctoral fellow and research associate at the Optical Spectroscopy Laboratory at The University of Texas, Austin. In 2001, he joined the faculty at the University of Arizona and is now an Associate Professor in Biomedical Engineering, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Optical Sciences, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the BIO5 Institute. He is developing optical spectroscopic techniques for the assessment of tissue pathologies and regeneration. One aspect of his research leads to novel endoscopic clinical imaging of tumors. In parallel efforts he conducts pre-clinical imaging of biological model system with advanced intravital microscopy to answer questions on angiogenesis and the structure of the extracellular matrix.
