Amy L. Waer, M.D. was appointed assistant professor of clinical surgery in 2004 in the Department of Surgery at The University of Arizona. Prior to this appointment she was in private practice general surgery at Southeastern Surgical Associates in Virginia Beach, VA. She served as the Director of the Surgery Clerkship at The University of Arizona for five years and twice under her leadership the clerkship was recognized for excellence with the award for "Outstanding Achievement in Teaching by a Clerkship of Elective in the Clinical Sciences." In July 2009, Dr. Waer was appointed Program Director of the General Surgery Residency Program.
Since coming to The University of Arizona, Dr. Waer has held several positions including Chief of General Surgery at University Medical Center and University Physicians Healthcare Hospital, and Associate Director, Perioperative Services and Multispeciality Surgical Clinic Director at University Physicians Healthcare Hospital. She has served as a Societies mentor since 2006 and was appointed Block Director, Advanced Topics at The University of Arizona in August 2008.
Dr. Waer has been the recipient of numerous awards including "Outstanding Teaching Award" in 2006 and 2007, "The Charles F. Zukoski Award for Outstanding Role Model in Surgery" in 2007 and "Excellence in Clinical Science Teaching for Medical Students" in 2009.
Dr. Waer received both her undergraduate and medical degrees from The University of Arizona and also completed her residency here in 1997.
Her research and clinical interests include Native American culture as it pertains to surgery, surgical education and breast surgery. She has co-authored several peer-reviewed publications. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Waer is also a member of serveral medical societies including the Tucson Surgical Society, Arizona Women's Physician Association, Association of Women Surgeons and Association for Academic Surgery. She was elected vice president of the Arizona Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and is currently president-elect.
