Partnering in the fight against skin cancer

As the saying goes, an ounce of prevention equals a pound of cure. Never did this saying ring more true than it does in the case of skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than one million new cases are diagnosed each year — more than all other cancers combined, yet it is a type of cancer that we possess the tools to prevent.

According to the Skin Cancer Institute at the Arizona Cancer Center, education about prevention not only makes a difference but it saves lives.  One of the goals of the Institute is to increase awareness of how we can prevent skin cancer.  While the Institute hosts events and activities to talk about skin cancer prevention,” we simply could not do it without our community partners.” said Robin Harris, the Institute’s Deputy Director. “R & R Lotion is a great example of a local business that has stepped up as a partner with us in the fight against skin cancer.”

R & R Lotions is a family owned business that has been making high quality lotion and sunscreen right here in Arizona for over 30 years. While originally R&R focused on outdoor workers, the business has grown and today provides a range of sunscreens for golfers, hikers, and people who spend their time enjoying the many outside activities that Arizona has to offer.  Richard Rich who founded the business was a natural partner.

Since 2007 R&R has been a regular provider of sunscreen samples in support of Skin Cancer Institute programs in Phoenix and Tucson.  “In addition to generously providing a steady flow of sunscreen to our efforts, they have also provided support personnel on occasion, as well as out of the box thinking in response to some of the challenges we have faced.” said health educator, Gayle McCartney.  “For example in 2009 when Polaroid stopped making the film we used in our UV camera, R&R created and provided the Skin Cancer Institute with a new  prototype UV digital camera that allowed us to continue to demonstrate  firsthand the sun damage that is occurring. R&R is truly a community partner we can always count on!”

Most recently R&R Lotion is collaborating with the Skin Cancer Institute on a unique project to provide free sunscreen dispensers and sunscreen at reduced cost to some of Tucson’s most popular outdoor venues including Biosphere 2, Pima Air & Space Museum, Tohono Chul Park, Tucson Botanical Gardens, , and the Reid Park Zoo.  This important project, which is part of the ‘Protect Your Skin’ campaign, will potentially reach more than 1.5 million visitors each year and create awareness about sun safety and skin cancer prevention.

A spokesperson for the company said, “R&R Lotion’s mission is to educate the consumer and community about the potential for the Sun’s ability to harm us. We partner with organizations, such as the Arizona Cancer Center, who care about the well-being of all people. It is partnerships like this which will help double the efforts to get the critical “messages” out to everyone.”
