Each year the Arizona Cancer Center presents the Donald Ware Waddell Award to a nationally acclaimed scientist who has made outstanding contributions to cancer research. Robert A. Weinberg, PhD, professor and founding member of the Whitehead Institute at MIT, will recieve the award and present the 21st annual Waddell Award Lectures.
A founding member of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, Dr. Weinberg is a pioneer in cancer research, most widely known for his discoveries of the first oncogene - a gene that causes normal cells to form tumors - and the first tumor suppressor gene.
His research primarily focusses on two areas: The interactions between epithelial and stromal cells(the two major types of cells found in mammallian tissue) that produce carcinomas and the processes by which cancer cells invade and metastases.
Dr. Weinberg is known worldwide for his innovative research and expertise, and can be credited with moving cancer research forward.
There will be a lecture at Noon for the scientific community, and at 5 pm, a lecture geared for the general public, followed by light refreshments.
