Mark D. Gilbert, MD, has been named director of clinical professional development at the Arizona Cancer Center.
In this role, Dr. Gilbert, a psychiatrist in and associate medical director of the Arizona Cancer Center’s Oncology Psychosocial team, will identify areas for cancer center clinic staff professional development, enrichment, mentoring and compassionate care for to benefit employees and patients.
Dr. Gilbert is also associate medical director of the Oncology Psychosocial program, a collaborative team of four social workers who work with Dr. Gilbert and Karen Weihs, MD, providing social and emotional care to cancer patients.
“Supporting our faculty, staff and support care workers will enhance and improve our patients’ experience at the clinic and will ultimately engender the ideal healing environment demanded of cancer care,” Dr. Gilbert said.
“The end result of this process will be a professional center of excellence where peer mentoring, employee validation, a collaborative system of peer review, prevention of burnout and compassion fatigue, forums for stories of courage, and resources for self-care will permeate the working environment,” Dr. Gilbert said.
