A powerful documentary film about breast cancer featuring an Arizona Cancer Center patient and her family, and the Cancer Center’s genetic counselor has been nominated for an EMMY® award, presented by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

“In the Family” tells the personal story of filmmaker Joanna Rudnick who tested positive for the hereditary “breast cancer” gene. For her film, Rudnick also followed Betty Villegas and her family, and interviewed Jessica Ray, the Arizona Cancer Center’s genetic counselor.

Pictured are Betty, granddaughter Selah and daughter Olga.

The film was nominated in the Outstanding Informational Programming – Long Form category. In 2008, the film premiered at the SilverDocs Film Festival and was broadcast nationally on PBS' P.O.V. “In the Family” was also a finalist for the National Institute for Health Care Management Foundation’s Health Care Radio and Television Journalism Award in 2009.

The EMMY awards will be presented Sept. 20.
