Our Friends

In 1986, a small group of inspirational Phoenix women organized a dinner and auction. The event raised more than $13,000 for cancer research and launched a volunteer organization called Phoenix Friends of the University of Arizona Cancer Center.

Since that inagural event, the Phoenix Friends have raised more than $5 million to support the University of Arizona Cancer Center’s research and service throughout Arizona!

2011

The monies raised by the Phoenix Friends in 2011 funded the outstanding research efforts of Drs. Patricia Thompson and Abraham Jacob and the further implementation of OnCore®, an award-winning clinical trial online database.

AAbraham Jacob.jpgbraham Jacob, MD, is an Associate Professor of Surgery and Director of the University of Arizona Ear Institute. He earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan, completed his residency in Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, and his fellowship in otology, neurotology and cranial base surgery at The Ohio State University in Columbus. Dr. Jacob's research interests include the prevention, detection, treatment, and rehabilitation of chemotherapy-induced hearing loss with a focus on drug development.

patricia.thompson.JPGPatricia Thompson, PhD, is Associate Professor of Cellular and Molecular Medicine. She earned her doctorate in immunology and microbiology from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Thompson is the innovative director of the UACC Cancer Prevention and Control Program.  She leads a major effort to identify modifiable risk factors for cancer and highlight the CPC’s successes in finding new ways to prevent cancer.

OnCore®

With your support through the Phoenix Friends, our OnCore® clinical trial database now has features that make the system even more efficient for patients who are searching for clinical trials.  The new features include:

  • A new Study Information Portal that helps the UACC post selected study information to our website for the public to access.  Potentials clinical trial participants and referring physicians can now search open clinical trials and also view disease-specific data.  See www.azcc.arizona.edu/research/clinical-trials to learn more.
  • Enhanced clinical trail administration to activate studies; manage study committees; build a study calendar; collect subject information; monitor accrual, deviations and toxicities; and report on study progress.
  • Implementation of a paperless online scientific review submission.  The feature expedites a full review of a clinical trial by those granting agencies that approve new trials.
