COPD:
Southeastern Arizona Tea Study
Who is conducting the study? This study will be conducted by Arizona Cancer Center researchers at the University of Arizona.
Principal Investigator: Iman Hakim, MD, PhD
What is the purpose of the Study? The primary goal of this study is to test whether regular tea consumption by subjects with difficulty in breathing (COPD) is associated with decreased damage to fat, protein or genetic material. This type of damage is thought to contribute to the development of cancer.
How long is the study? To participate, patients are asked to devote an 8-month time period to the study.
Who is eligible for the study?
Researchers are looking to recruit persons who have difficult breathing (COPD) and have 25 or more years of smoking history.
What are participants asked to do?
- Attend an orientation
- Agree to be assigned to drinking a green tea or non-tea beverage for six months
- Provide urine samples once per month
- Have blood samples, exhaled breath and cheek cells collected 3 times during the study
- Have a sputum sample collected at the beginning and end of the study
- Complete questionnaires about diet, environmental exposures and health
- Keep a daily log of drinking tea throughout the study
